- Ex nihilo is a Latin phrase meaning "out of nothing". It often appears in conjunction with the concept of creation, as in creatio ex nihilo, meaning "creation out of nothing." Frederick Hart has a series of figures that look like they are formed "out of nothing," showing both movement and creation, which is what captures me when I look at his work. I like the way that the figures look like they are moving, as if there is movement of air or water, in a very fluid manner. I want to emulate the movement and the creating something out of nothing aspect of Hart's work.
